Description

Attractive woodcut engraving by Paul Revere illustrating the lunar eclipse of November 11, 1780, found on the front cover of "An Astronomical Diary: or Almanack For the Year of Christian Era, 1780" by Nathanael Low, printed in Boston by Gill & Fleet. The image is labeled “A Type of a Lunar Eclipse,” with Circle B representing the beginning; M the Middle; and E the End of the Eclipse. The illustration features one central darkened circle with a thick white bordering circle. The circle is divided into four with three lines. A fourth line is appearing at the top of the circle and crossing horizontally. Three smaller circles appear on this line each labeled “E” “M” and “B” from left to right. This is a Revere re-engraving of another earlier woodcut done in 1772 for Edes & Gill. The 24-page almanac measures 4 x 6.75 and remains in very good condition, with scattered dampstaining, an ink notation to the left of Revere's woodcut, and surface scuffing affecting the legibility of the final page.
