World War II-dated ALS by British officer Lt. James Bennett, signed “Jim,” three pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.75 x 8, Air Mail Letter Card letterhead, June 12, 1941. Handwritten letter to "Darling Joy," in part: "Just time for a letter to you. I haven't had a moment in the last three weeks to write a line. My truck got shot up by a Jerry armored car and I have lost every stitch of kit I possess. I am now going about in borrowed clothes and present a somewhat peculiar military figure. My greatcoat I took off a dead N.Z. private and my cap is a S.A. gunner's! However, I am very fit and feeling tops. My section got a bit knocked about: 13 killed, wounded and missing and 8 out of 27 vehicles totally written off…The Jerries nabbed my convoy about ten days ago, and behaved damn well to us. They were escorting us towards their lines when we were rescued by one of our tank patrols so we were only prisoners of war for three hours!" The letter is addressed to Mrs. A. P. L. Bennett in Cheam, Surrey, and bears a triangular "Passed" censorship stamp. In fine condition.
