Description

Four swatches of Kapton foil attested to as being flown and removed from the thermal protection systems of the Apollo 13 and Apollo 16 command modules after their respective splashdowns and recoveries. The two Apollo 13 swatches .75″ x .5 and 1″ x .5″, and both Apollo 16 swatches measure .75″ x .5″; both sets of swatches are presented in small acrylic cases affixed to individual presentation certificates signed by Sandy Clarkson of The Right Stuff Space. The Apollo 16 certificate attests that the foil “was part of the Dick Underwood collection.” In overall fine condition. NASA technician Richard Underwood worked in the Johnson Space Center’s Photographic Technology Laboratory for over two decades and was responsible for developing the Apollo photographs—in fact, he was the first person to view every photograph from the Gemini, Apollo, Skylab, Apollo-Soyuz, and the first 23 space shuttle missions.
