Description

Two TLSs from Herbert Hoover, both personal 7.25 x 10.5 letterhead, dated to June 22, 1938, and to November 1, 1943, both addressed to J. Sam White of North Carolina. The earlier letter, ostensibly remarking on his Research Committee on Social Trends, in part: “I am deeply concerned with the work of your committee and I also feel that if the work is to proceed with sanity and effectiveness, it is going to fall upon the executive committee of which you are a member…I was, no doubt, responsible for the creation of this committee, as I am convinced that no political party can rest solely upon criticism; that it must have certain definite, positive convictions on fundamental questions and must express them vigorously. The question of methods by which such convictions are to be into reality is very secondary to the principles themselves. As a matter of fact, the whole concept of our government and life was founded on certain convictions and principles, and the men who formulated them were much less concerned with the determination of methods than they were with these convictions.” The second letter, in full: “Just a word to express my personal appreciation for your assistance in securing a widespread radio audience for that Kansas City speech of mine. I am in hopes that you feel it worth your time and efforts and that the speech may be a contribution to clarifying this greatest problem before us, aside from winning the war.” In overall very good to fine condition, with some light creasing.
