Description

American painter, muralist, and designer (1875-1945) best known for his work in stained glass in the Gothic Revival style; on his death, the New York Times described him as 'the world's greatest contemporary craftsman in stained glass.' Fantastic original watercolor painting by Charles Jay Connick, accomplished on an off-white 11.5 x 14.5 sheet, signed in the lower border in ink, "C. J. Connick, Rocamadour, Sept. 17-28." Done in an impressionist or pointillist style, the artwork portrays the famous pilgrimage church of Notre Dame on the cliff in Rocamadour, France. The famous church houses the wooden statue of the Black Madonna said to have been carved by Saint Amadour, the legendary founder of the shrine of Notre Dame de Rocamadour. Attractively matted and framed to an overall size of 18.5 x 22. In fine condition. Connick's works in private hands are very rare as the Connick Foundation gave his entire collection to the Boston Public Library.
