Description

Civil War Currency from Albany, NY. “The City of Albany will pay the bearer on demand FIFTY CENTS / In Current Bank Bills / when presented in sums of Five Dollars / at the Chamberlain’s Office.” Albany, July 17, 1862. The bill is undersigned by the City’s Chamberlain (C.J. Paige) and Albany Mayor Eli Perry. Printed by Gavitt & Cowell Albany. Center engraving of the iconic Dutch Reformed Church, also known as “The First Church” in Albany. This church was built in 1656 at modern State Street and Broadway in Beverwijck (“Beaver Town,” renamed Albany after English conquest of New Netherland in 1664).
