Description

Used by President Nixon to sign a "new Minimum Wage Bill on April 8, 1974," presented by the Secretary of Labor

Desirable pen used by President Richard Nixon to sign a "new Minimum Wage Bill on April 8, 1974." The official Parker 'bill signer' pen measures 5.25″ long and features a navy-blue plastic barrel bearing a silver facsimile signature and a silver-tone cap. Includes its original transmittal letter signed by Secretary of Labor Peter J. Brennan, April 18, 1974, to Senator Peter H. Dominick, in part: "As you know the President signed the new Minimum Wage Bill on April 8, 1974. The President has asked me to extend his thanks and appreciation to you for the important part you played in helping to bring the new Minimum Wage Law into being. He regrets that it was not possible to have a public signing but wants you to have one of his signing pens as a memento of this important occasion." Handsomely matted and framed together to an overall size of 11 x 16.5. In fine condition, with staining to the transmittal letter. Accompanied by the pen's original box, separate from the framed display. At the bill signing ceremony on April 8, 1974, President Nixon commented that 'raising the minimum wage is now a matter of justice that can no longer be fairly delayed.' The legislation raised the hourly minimum wage from $1.60 to $2.30 for approximately 36 million workers covered under the provisions of the 1966 Minimum Wage Law. The new law also extended federal minimum wage and overtime requirements to between seven and eight million workers not previously covered. A significant 'bill signer' from an impactful piece of economic legislation.
