Description

Rare original glossy 8 x 10 silver gelatin photo of Edie Sedwick working on her beloved clay horse in the Cambridge art studio of her cousin Lily Swann Saarinen. In very good condition, with scattered stains and creases, remnants of adhered paper, and instances of emulsion irregularity.

Horses, as much of her artwork reveals, served as a creative anchoring point for Sedgwick throughout her life, a go-to subject from a childhood spent on California ranches. When she went to study art with Saarinen in the fall of 1963, Sedgwick spent much of her time working on a clay horse, pictured here. According to Saarinen: ‘She was the most talented young person I’ve taught art to…Pretty soon my life was Edie because I couldn’t do anything else. She worked frantically. She wanted to do a horse. She said she’d ridden them all her life and knew every inch of them…So she worked on this one horse. It looked like a T’ang horse. It took her all winter.’
