Description

Desirable segment of Kapton foil from the collection of Apollo 11 LMP Buzz Aldrin, attested to as flown on the Command Module Columbia and removed following the mission. The small .5″ x .25″ segment is affixed to a descriptive sheet of Aldrin's personal letterhead, in part: "The segment placed below was removed from Command Module Columbia after splashdown and recovery by USS Hornet on July 24, 1969. Apollo 11 was the first manned lunar landing mission during July 16 to 24, 1969. Neil Armstrong and I made the landing on Sunday July 20. Just a few hours after landing, Neil became the first man to walk on the Moon. Some 20 minutes after Neil's first step, I became the second man to step on the Moon. We explored and set up science experiments during the nearly 2 and a half hours out on the lunar surface…This segment was part of the thermal protection system that covered the entire outer surface of Columbia. It traveled nearly 500,000 miles during the Apollo 11 flight and was exposed to the vacuum of space for over 195 hours, including almost 60 hours in lunar orbit." In fine condition.
