Description

Confederate general, lawyer, and planter (1818-1867) who served in 1862 as the Confederate States secretary of war during the Civil War, when he reformed procurement, wrote the conscription law, and strengthened western defenses; the youngest grandson of President Thomas Jefferson. Civil War-dated ALS signed “G. W. Randolph,” one page, 5.25 x 8, August 26, 1861. Handwritten letter to Virginia Governor John Letcher, in part: “I understand that…A. B. Guigon of the Howitzer Battalion intends to apply for a commission of the Provisional Army of V’a with the view of being attached to that battalion or some other comparative service. I cordially recommend him as a gallant soldier and high toned gentleman.” Alexander B. Guigon (1831-1878) would go on to become a Captain of Virginia Artillery. In fine condition, with light toning along the left edge. Encapsulated in a PSA/DNA authentication holder.
