Brigadier general (1809-1861) in the Confederate States Army who is best known for organizing the defense of Virginia along the Potomac River soon after the state's secession from the Union. He commanded troops in the Battle of Blackburn's Ford and the First Battle of Bull Run (First Manassas) in July 1861 before becoming despondent and committing suicide. Civil War-dated manuscript DS, signed “Philip St. Geo. Cocke, Col. Va. Vol. Cmdr,” one page, 8 x 10.25, May 25, 1861. Pay order from Camp Henry, Culpeper Court House, Virginia, issued to James E. Yates for the cost of $511.22 worth of bacon, with William H. Thomas of the Subsistence Department stating that he purchased the meat “for the use of the Troops at this post” and that he has not paid the bill. Signed and approved by Philip St. George Cocke. Countersigned below by Yates stating that he has received payment. In fine condition. Encapsulated in a PSA/DNA authentication holder.
