German scientist (1854-1915) who pioneered (and coined the term) chemotherapy and, in his research on a cure for syphilis, developed the 'magic bullet' concept of selectively targeting a disease-causing organism. Ehrlich received the Nobel Prize for Medicine together with Ilya Ilyich Mechnikov in 1908.
