Description

American Orientalist and writer (1900-1989) who was an influential scholar of China and Central Asia, especially Mongolia, and served as an advisor to Chiang Kai-shek during World War II. In 1950, Senator Joseph McCarthy accused Lattimore of being 'the top Russian espionage agent in the United States,' leading to years of Congressional inquiry that failed to substantiate the charge. Two items: a vintage glossy 8 x 10 photo of Lattimore smoking a pipe, signed in fountain pen; and a TLS by Lattimore, one page, 8.5 x 11, Johns Hopkins University letterhead, September 20, 1950, apologizing for sending a secretarial autograph, in part: "I have to have a great part of my mail signed this way, as owing to the consequences of the attacks on me by the disreputable McCarthy, my wife is still kept busy full time and I spend at least half my time dealing with correspondence and other matters arising out of the case." In overall very good to fine condition, with a few creases and an edge tear to the photo.
