Description

Manuscript DS, one page, 8 x 10, January 30, 1832. Petition to "the Honourable Levi Woodbury, Secretary of the Navy," in part: "We respectfully recommend Thomas Duncan of Dauphin County, State of Pennsylvania, (a grand son of the late Thomas Duncan, one of the Judges of the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania, to the time of his death) as a suitable person, to fill the office of a Midshipman, in the Navy—and humbly solicit of you—that he be so appointed." Signed at the conclusion by 19 members of the 22nd United States Congress from Pennsylvania, including: Andrew Stewart, David Potts, Jr., Philander Stephens, Thomas H. Crawford, Lewis Dewart, John Goddard Watmough, John Conrad Bucher, Adam King, Robert McCoy, Henry King, Joel K. Mann, John Banks, Robert Allison, John Gilmore, Thomas M. T. McKennan, Joshua Evans, Jr., Samuel A. Smith, George Burd, and Peter Ihrie, Jr. Of these signers, McKennan was probably most prominent—he would serve as Fillmore's Secretary of the Interior for 11 days. In fine condition, with toned edges.
