Description

Significant collection of ten complete original Illinois newspapers offering contemporary coverage of the Kennedy assassination and its aftermath, dating from November 22, 1963 to December 7, 1963. Together, they offer a fascinating chronology of events beginning with the shooting in Dallas, through JFK's burial, and concluding with the start of the Warren Commission investigation. Mixed in are interesting bits of local news, quaint period advertisements, and articles on noteworthy world events.

November 22, 1963 - Rockford Register-Republic [Extra!], with headline, "Kennedy Assassinated; Johnson New President," and famous image of Secret Service agent Clint Hill jumping onto the presidential limousine as it sped away to Parkland Hospital.

November 22, 1963 - Chicago Tribune, headlined, "Assassin Kills Kennedy / Lyndon. Johnson Sworn In," with color portraits of both. Other front-page imagery includes LBJ being sworn in on Air Force One, Jacqueline Kennedy standing in her blood-spattered dress, and the 'last photo' of Kennedy alive.

November 23, 1963 - Chicago's American, with headline, "Johnson Calls for Unity / Fanatic Charged as JFK Assassin." Front-page pieces are headed: "Former Marine Sharpshooter Sane, D.A. Says," "Family Views Kennedy, Rites Monday Noon," "Confers with Ike and Rusk, Meets Cabinet," and "Khrushchev Signs JFK Condolence Book." Features Vaughn Shoemaker's cartoon, "The Free World Mourns."

November 23, 1963 - Chicago Daily News, with headline, "The World Mourns / Charge Ex-Defector With Assassinating President Kennedy. Includes coverage of Lee Harvey Oswald's defection to the Soviet Union, news of Lyndon B. Johnson's first full day as president, and famous images of LBJ being sworn in on Air Force One and Jacqueline Kennedy standing in her bloody outfit.

November 23, 1963 - Rockford Register-Republic, with headline, "Nation Mourns Kennedy; Charge Red as Assassin." Front-page articles are headed "Castro Sympathizer Charged in Murder" and "Body to Lie in State at Capitol." Further reportage profiles Lyndon B. Johnson and discusses his first day on the job.

November 23, 1963 - Rockford Morning Star, with headline, "Sniper Assassinates Kennedy; Arrest Castro Sympathizer." Front-page images include Johnson's swearing-in, a Kennedy portrait, and Oswald holding up his manacles.

November 25, 1963 - Rockford Register-Republic, with headline, "Kings, Premiers Attend Rites / Nation Pays Final Honors to Kennedy." Front-page pieces are headed: "John-John Receives Flag for 'Daddy,'" "Huge Throngs View Casket During Night," "Chief Given Hero's Burial in Arlington," "Oswald Left Behind Assassination Plan," and "World Mourns for President—Red China Only Exception."

November 28, 1963 - Chicago Tribune, with headline, "Johnson Tells His Aims: He urges enactment of key Kennedy bills." Other coverage includes the sale of Abraham Zapruder's film (and his subsequent $25,000 donation to the widow of Officer J.D. Tippit, another victim of Lee Harvey Oswald), Gov. John Connally's story of the assassination, and NASA's first successful launch of an Atlas/Centaur rocket. Rear page has an image collage under the headline, "President Makes First Speech to Congress—Mrs. Kennedy Visits Grave."

December 6, 1963 - Rockford Register-Republic, with headline, "Wife Says Oswald Fired at Walker," on the allegation that Oswald attempted to assassinate Major General Edwin Walker on April 10, 1963. Other related pieces are headed: "Police Find Oswald Used Target Range," "Kennedy Family Bids Goodbye to White House," and "Reds Cash in on Tragedy."

December 7, 1963 - Rockford Register-Republic, with headline, "Assassin Probers Ask Special Power," concerning the Warren Commission's ability to force testimony.

In overall very good to fine condition, with some toning and typical edge chipping.
