Description

American lawyer and international diplomatic negotiator (1916-1970) known for negotiating the 1960-1962 exchange of captured American U-2 pilot Francis Gary Powers for Soviet spy Rudolf Abel, and for negotiating the 1962 release and return of 9,703 prisoners held by Cuba after the failed Bay of Pigs Invasion. Hardcover album presented to attorney James B. Donovan in 1962 to recognize his work in negotiating the release of Bay of Pigs prisoners, 10.75 x 8.5, containing 93 pages with over 1,400 signatures from Cuban families. The album begins with an ornate calligraphic inscription in Spanish (translated): "Sr. James B. Donovan, General Counsel of the Committee of Cuban Families. The time comes when the generous and persistent work of you, a teacher of legal disciplines and a man who knows how to feel the light of charity, translates into the freedom of a large group of prisoners, who in the ordeal have demonstrated the courage and the faith of genuine Christian consciences. And those of us who are united to them by ties of blood and spirit, as a due testimony of gratitude, offer you this album, that we honor you this album, that we have signed while we reiterate our warm gratitude."
