Description

Four TLSs signed "Warren E. Burger," each one page, Supreme Court of the United States letterhead, dated 1970-1974, all to Newbold Noyes, editor of the Washington Evening Star. Burger weighs in on an article about prison reform and the case of Victor J. Orsinger ("This piece took a great deal of courage on the part of the man involved and your reporter handled it with unusual responsibility and sensitivity. It was a contribution to the whole problem of corrections improvement and journalism at its best"), transmits a press release, asks to "visit with you about some of the broad problems of Press and Court," and notes that "from the day I came here I was determined to do something to improve the working conditions of the Press." In very good to fine condition, with paperclip impressions (some rusty) to the top edges. Accompanied by Noyes's retained carbon copies of his letters to Burger, and a clipping of the Orsinger article.
