Description

TLS signed “Michael Goldstein,” two pages, 8.5 x 11, Goldstein Organization letterhead, May 14, 1969. Letter from Michael F. Goldstein, Jimi Hendrix’s publicist, to Hendrix’s manager Michael Jeffrey, detailing his recent activities, primarily manipulating the press responses to Hendrix’s drug bust in Toronto for possession of hashish and heroin. In part: "To bring you up to date. As you know, we've been working on: 1. The Life Magazine story, 2. a story with Playboy, 3. pop music round-up with look, as well as handling advance publicity for the tour, on which I am enclosing a separate memo from Rod Jacobson and clips from Pat Costello. Along other lines, in relation to the events in Toronto, we did the following: 1. Convinced the A.P. and U.P.I. representatives in New York that the story was of no major significance, therefore keeping it off national news wires; 2. Indicated to the Canadian News Service that the drug was unidentified and not heroin, so that no specific drug was mentioned by their news service; 3. Got the New York Times to cut the story from 4 paragraphs to 1; 4. Had long conversations with Rolling Stone and Richie York in Toronto on the ramifications of Rolling Stone story; 5. Time Magazine—convinced them that it was not a 'People' story; 6. Newsweek—convinced them that it was not a 'Newsmaker' story; Last but not least, after much prodding and a great deal of threatening, convinced John Wilcock of 'Other Scenes' to send me original of picture used in his publication, which was returned to Jimi Hendrix with the other pictures I was holding for him…P.S. I am also enclosing the first issue of 'Changes,' the new pop music paper published in New York. Check the center spread—now pull it out." Includes the copy of Changes mentioned, which has a portrait of Hendrix's chest and necklaces as the center spread. In fine condition.
