Description

Kurt Cobain’s backstage “Talent” pass for the 1994 MTV Movie Awards held at Sony Pictures Studios in Culver City, California, on June 4, 1994. The green plastic pass is issued as No. 225 and is marked below in black ink by an unknown hand, “K. Cobain.” In fine condition.

During the early 1990s, the consignor of this pass worked as security for Kurt Cobain and then later as a night watchman at his Seattle home at 171 Lake Washington Boulevard East. This pass was one of several items gifted to him during his time of employment, which lasted until June 1995.

Kurt Cobain died of a self-inflicted gunshot at his Seattle home on April 5, 1994, some two months before the MTV Movie Awards aired, which indicates that this pass was presumably delivered to Cobain in advance; his status as “Talent,” or as a potential performer or presenter at the event, is unknown. His former Nirvana bandmate Dave Grohl, however, used the ceremony to make his first public appearance in the wake of Cobain’s death, performing the songs ‘Money (That's What I Want)/Long Tall Sally’ and ‘Helter Skelter’ with the supergroup The Backbeat Band.
