Description

Remarkable original 5.75 x 3.5 negative of the RMS Titanic wreckage site showing the SS Birma rescue ship, taken by Carpathia passenger Mabel Fenwick on the morning of April 15, 1912. In fine condition. The consignor notes that this was acquired from a direct descendant of the Fenwick family. James and Mabel Fenwick were newlyweds beginning a three month honeymoon trip to Europe aboard the RMS Carpathia. They departed New York on April 11, 1912, not knowing that four days later the Carpathia would come to save over 700 survivors from the most famous shipping disaster of all time. Early on the morning of April 15, Mabel Fenwick was woken up by a man’s voice crying, 'Titanic’s going down.' Mabel rushed on deck with her camera and began taking photographs. The present negative was among numerous images she captured that chronicled this momentous event and provides a unique record of the events that unfolded.
