Notorious and aggressive Union general (1814-1879) who distinguished himself at the Battle of Williamsburg in 1862 and as a result was promoted to major general; later that year he led troops into battle at the Second Battle of Bull Run and Antietam. Two Civil War-dated ALSs, signed "J. Hooker, Maj. Genl., Comdg.," each one page both sides, Headquarters, Army of the Potomac letterhead, February 1863, both to Adjutant General Lorenzo Thomas. The first is dated February 12, 1863, 4.75 x 7.5, in part: "Among the officers required by your order of the 10th instant to report to the Board of which General Ricketts is President within ten days is Captain A. J. McNett 93d NY Volunteers. This officer states that he was ordered by General Martindale to report…January 22d…Under these circumstances will it be necessary for him to appear before the Board." The second is dated February 17, 1863, 7.5 x 9.5, in part: "I beg to invite your special attention to the case of Lieutenant Colonel E. R. Platt, 2d Artillery…Lt. Col. Platt was originally assigned to the 6th Corps, and when the Grand Division were formed he was transferred to the Left Grand Division…I have assigned him to duty at my Head Quarters proposing to ask to have him appointed Judge Advocate of this Army…I earnestly hope that he may be allowed to retain the rank he held as Asst. Inspector General. It seems hard that an officer who has served faithfully and with so much advantage to public service should lose the rank conferred upon him for his worth." In overall very good to fine condition, with trimmed edges and small tears to both.
