Description

Civil War-dated handwritten letter from F. M. White, the president of the Memphis and Tennessee Railroad, one page both sides, 7.75 x 9.75, June 9, 1862. Penned in the hand of secretary and treasurer C. F. Vance, a letter to Confederate General Daniel Ruggles, in part: "The Mississippi and Tennessee Rail Road Co., would respectfully show that the switches and side tracks of the road at the Grenada Depot were intended only for the ordinary business of the road, and are believed to be fully equal to theā€¦of that business; but on account of the disuse of the Memphis and Charleston and Memphis and this rail road there is a vast accumulation of locomotives and cars at the Grenada Depot. And it is altogether impracticable for the company to perform its ordinary business without the removal of a great portion of that rolling stock from its switches and side tracks. Being advised that the different Depots below on the rail roads south are likewise over burdened with rolling stock—and seeing no probability of immediate relief by removal of the stock at Grenada, we suggest the propriety of an order authorizing the construction of additional side tracks and switches from the Mississippi and Tennessee road connecting with the Mississippi control at points below the Depot of the Mississippi." In fine condition.
