Description

The Truman White House

Uncommon off-white 8 x 6 engraving of the south face of the White House by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, signed in black ballpoint, "Harry S. Truman," and in black ink, "Bess W. Truman." In fine condition, with some small stains to the lower left. Encapsulated in an SGC authentication holder.

The White House Reconstruction, also known as the Truman Reconstruction, was a comprehensive dismantling and rebuilding of the interior of the White House between 1949 and 1952, a project that forced Harry and Bess Truman to live across the street at Blair House for much of the construction. One of the more controversial changes was the Truman Balcony, a second floor balcony overlooking the south lawn which Truman asserted would provide shade for the lower portico and add balance to the otherwise vertical appearance created by the columns—President and First Lady Obama cited the Truman Balcony as their favorite spot in the White House.
