Description

Group of four unused color tickets from the 1908 Republican National Convention held at the Chicago Coliseum between June 16 and 19, 1908. Each ticket is marked "Guest" and measures 6 x 2.75, with all stamped accordingly with admission day and seating location: "First Day Only, Entrance H, Section 35, Row B, Seat 3," "Second Day Only, Entrance E, Section 81, Row F, Seat 4," "Third Day Only, Entrance E, Section 81, Row F, Seat 3," and "Fourth Day Only, Entrance K, Section 50, Row L, Seat 6." Also included is a scarce unused admission ticket for the notification ceremony of William H. Taft, held at the residence of his half-brother Charles Phelps Taft in Cincinnati, Ohio, on July 28, 1908. The ticket measures 6 x 2.75 and is marked "Guest" and numbered "154." In overall fine condition. On the strength of President Roosevelt's endorsement, Secretary of War William H. Taft received the nomination at the convention, with New York Representative James S. Sherman being named his running mate. In honor of Taft's presidential nomination, the Notification Day Committee sponsored a ceremony held in his honor in his hometown of Cincinnati.
