Issue No. 515 of the Virginia Gazette and Petersburg Intelligencer from October 10, 1794, four pages on two adjoining sheets, measures 21.5 x 17.5 open, prominently featuring two critical events in the nation’s early history: the Whiskey Rebellion and the Battle of Fallen Timbers. The front page is dominated by the full text of President George Washington’s proclamation of September 25th, which calls upon the militia of several states to suppress the first challenge to federal authority by western Pennsylvania farmers who were refusing to pay the federal tax imposed on their distilled products. The second page publishes several official dispatches from General Anthony Wayne detailing events leading up to and following his successful military operation against an alliance of Indians that secured old Northwest Territory. Additional notices include a communiqué describing the yellow fever epidemic then raging in Baltimore, a report of a runaway slave, and an advertisement for “Plans of the City of Washington,” the nation’s future capital. Framed to an overall size of 24.75 x 20.75, with a window backing to view the reverse. In very good condition, with light staining, creasing, and trivial small areas of paper loss.
