American cartoonist (1876-1962) who won two Pulitzer Prizes; he was especially well known for his editorial cartoons in support of the conservation movement. Two items signed by Darling: a matte-finish 8 x 10 photo of Darling in a tweed jacket, boldly signed and inscribed in fountain pen, "From an old has been—With heartiest good wishes, Jay N. Darling, alias 'Ding'"; and a TLS signed "Ding Darling," one page, 8.5 x 11, Des Moines Register and Tribune letterhead, July 20, 1954, in part: "There is a prospect that in the near future an agency which hasn't even my enthusiastic approval will issue a book of reproductions of my old cartoons—a project which doesn't interest me in the least. Cartoons are like pancakes: they're only good when right off the griddle and they get soggier with each day's passing after that." In very good to fine condition, with heavy chipping and a repaired tear to the letter, and edge rippling and a small stain to the photo.
