Description

Fantastic group of five items associated with pioneering aviator and polar explorer Richard E. Byrd (1888-1957), who in 1927 made a transatlantic flight on the America, a Fokker C-2 trimotor monoplane, along with Bernt Balchen, George Otto Noville, and Bert Acosta. Includes: a TLS in French signed "R. E. Byrd," one page, July 5, 1927, just four days after ditching the America near Ver-sur-Mer, after they were unable to land due to fog; a letter from A. Fortin to an aeronautic collector, M. Lassalle, dated August 21, 1956, bearing a fragment recovered from the America wreckage; an original vintage 7 x 5 photograph of the America taking off at Long Island; an original vintage 6.5 x 4.25 photograph of Richard Byrd in Paris with Ferdinand Foch by his side; and a Paramount Pictures letter dated March 30, 1930, bearing the stamped signature of M. W. Kempner, stating that he is anxiously awaiting Byrd's return from the South Pole in order to produce "one of the greatest pictures ever shown." In very good to fine condition.
