Agreement by which Jefferson Airplane agrees to play at "Loser's North Pavillion" in San Jose, California, from August 2-7, 1966, specifying, "4 - 45 min sets per night, Sound 4 - Mikes & 150 Watt amplifier." Signed at the conclusion by Balin (using his legal name, "Martyn Buchwald") for Jefferson Airplane and countersigned by Lenn Macchairella for The Loser's North Pavillion. In fine condition, with light edge toning.
Accompanied by a letter of provenance by Howard Wolf, who negotiated the agreement on behalf of the promoter, outlining the specific lawsuit that came out of this specific contract, which was negotiated by Jefferson Airplane's then-manager, Matthew Katz. In part: "When the Jefferson Airplane decided to fire Matthew [Katz] as their manager they brought up the issue that he had procured employment of the group, which is the function of an agent. So they filed suit in Superior Court claiming their management agreement should be ruled null and void since he functioned as an unlicensed talent agent…Katz was found guilty, with this contract being used as evidence. The Superior Court upheld the Labor Commission findings, and the Buchwald vs. Katz decision was then used by virtually every artist successfully against management ever since."
