Description

Two letters: a TLS as president, signed "Woodrow Wilson," one page, 7 x 8.75, White House letterhead, June 9, 1914, addressed to Mrs. Nelson H. Henry, in full: "I have been very much interested and touched by your letter of the seventh of June and shall take pleasure in discussing the matter with the Secretary of the Treasury at the earliest opportunity. Pray pardon this brief acknowledgment of your interesting letter"; and an ALS, signed "Edith Bolling Wilson, Mrs. Woodrow Wilson," two pages on two adjoining sheets, 5 x 8, black-bordered mourning stationery, postmarked February 22, 1924, addressed to Mrs. Frederick W. Rhinelander, in full: "Your note of sympathy and understanding has touched me very deeply—and I hope the land that lies between us in the sacred association of the cathedral will unite a genuine friendship. To me it is a very holy bond and I read in your letter the same reverent spirit." In overall very good condition, with dampstaining to the White House letter affecting appearance, but not readability. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope for the Bolling letter. Woodrow Wilson passed away on February 3, 1924, less than three weeks before Edith Bolling wrote her heartfelt letter.
