Description

"I think we can agree with part of what H. G. Wells said that ‘until a man has an education, a vote is a useless and dangerous thing for him to possess'"

Collection of eight TLSs, each signed “Jerry” or “Jerry Ford,” each one page, 7 x 9 and 8 x 10.5, dated between 1963 and 1974. Seven of the letters are on Congress of the United States letterhead, and one, the latest entry dated February 21, 1974, is on The Vice President letterhead. Notable passages include: April 12, 1963: “Thank you for your letter of April 8th requesting information on the other organizations [are] in the government which fight Communism beside the House Committee on Un-American Activities. The Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Senate Internal Security Subcommittee both are engaged in this activity. I have asked the Internal Security Subcommittee to send me some material on their work and that of the FBI which I will send to you. I hope this information will be useful. I am sure you know that there are also numerous private organizations that work to combat the atheistic Communist menace”; February 10, 1966: “All of us sincerely hope that peace talks between the United States and the North Vietnamese will become a reality. Wars are ended by negotiations and agreements. Any military or diplomatic actions which may be carried out to bring about a prompt, just and secure peace are to be encouraged”; and February 9, 1966: “I think we can agree with part of what H. G. Wells said that ‘until a man has an education, a vote is a useless and dangerous thing for him to possess.’ It is indeed a dangerous thing, but it may be very useful rather than useless.” In overall fine condition. Accompanied by an original mailing envelope bearing a stamped signature.
