American paleontologist, educator, and conservationist (1869-1945) best known for his taxonomy of vertebrate fossils at the La Brea Tar Pits in Los Angeles. TLS signed “John C. Merriam,” one page, 8.5 x 11, September 16, 1903. Letter to Captain E. L. Zalinski, in part: "Professor Putnam has recently turned over to me the copy of Professor Marsh's work on Fossil Birds, which you so kindly sent to me. This work is rare and I am very glad to get the copy. Thank you very sincerely for it." In fine condition, with some light creasing.
