Uncommon personal check, 6 x 2.75, filled out and signed by Clemente, "Roberto Clemente," payable to "Bilmore Hotel" for $51.48, August 17, 1972, marked "Room Service" in the memo field. Encapsulated in a plastic PSA/DNA authentication holder. In fine condition, with paper loss to the upper left corner tip. On August 17th the Pirates were in Los Angeles to wrap up a three game series, and presumably stayed at the Los Angeles Biltmore Hotel; Clemente, who was injured for much of the month, appeared as a pinch hitter in the ninth inning but went hitless. Clemente is scarce in personal checks, and this example dates to his final season—just months before he died in a tragic plane crash while en route to deliver humanitarian aid to Nicaragua.
