Description

Offered here to benefit the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation is a personal tour of the National Air & Space Museum’s Udvar-Hazy Center with Astronaut Thomas D. Jones, PhD. Scientist, author, pilot, and veteran NASA astronaut, Jones has spent more than eleven years with NASA and flown on four space shuttle missions to Earth orbit. On his last flight, Dr. Jones led three spacewalks to install the centerpiece of the International Space Station, the American Destiny laboratory. He has spent fifty-three days working and living in space.

Take a trip back in time as you explore the National Air & Space Museum’s Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center with Jones as your guide. You’ll be surrounded by space history while in the company of a man who can offer a unique perspective and insight into the world of aerospace and flight. The Udvar-Hazy Center, located in Chantilly, Virginia, is the home of thousands of aviation and space artifacts. The Center houses 152 large space artifacts, including the Gemini VII capsule, the Mobile Quarantine Unit used upon the return of the Apollo 11 crew, a 69-foot floor-to-ceiling Redstone rocket, and much more.

The crown jewel in the collection at the Udvar-Hazy Center is the decommissioned Space Shuttle orbiter Discovery. Discovery took the place of Enterprise, the hangar’s previous occupant, in April 2012 when it flew to Virginia from its home at Kennedy Space Center, Florida. With Discovery as a magnificent backdrop, you’ll be enthralled by Jones’ tales of his own time as an astronaut.
