Handwritten draft of lyrics for 'High Fashion' entirely in Prince's hand, one page, 8 x 10.5, circa 1984. The page is headed "'High Fashion,' by St. Paul," referring to St. Paul Peterson of Prince's band The Family. In part: "I know a sexy little girl / She's never in a low-class world / This woman is all the way vogue / High-Fashion is where her money goes / She dines at Le Dome up on the strip / Cheap liquor never touches her lips / Her brandy's imported every week / No problem, 7,000 eazy." Prince has made numerous corrections and changes throughout the draft. In very good to fine condition, with a tear and strip of masking tape to top edge obscuring second half of song title and some scattered light creasing. From the collection of Prince's assistant tour manager Gwen Leeds and accompanied by a letter of provenance. Leeds notes that Prince would frequently hand write song lyrics in a notebook and then ask that they be typed and supplied to his record company for registering and licensing. Recorded for the 1985 album The Family, this song was officially credited to Jerome Benton and St. Paul Peterson although it was written by Prince. It became the first track on the album and was released as its second single.
