Description

Emily Post

American author (1872–1960) who earned fame for her various books and columns on etiquette. Archive of eight letters by Post, consisting of three ALSs and five TLSs, totaling 11 pages, dated from 1938 to 1945 [several undated], all addressed to columnist Betty Beale. One letter, in part: “I am still holding my ground as a re-actionary (with a strong accent on the re) and an anti everything that is going on in Washington, but I will grant that my broadcast last Monday was the very worst that ever went over the air waves!” Another, in part: “Forgive me please! I love the handkerchief and I shall (and have) use(d) it with pleasure.” A third, in part: “Please forgive me about the chocolates. Really, I thought I had written so please let me thank you now. As a matter of fact they were very bad for me. In the first place, they ere fattening, and in the second place, they were temper exciting since each one was a New Dealer. I chewed them ferociously.” In overall fine condition. All are accompanied by their original mailing envelopes. For forty years Beale worked as a noted society columnist for The Washington Evening Star, attending thousands of galas and events in her quest to chronicle the ‘manners, customs and personalities’ of Washington’s upper crust.
