Stamp Act: William Logan

Philadelphia lawyer (1717–1776) who worked as the attorney for the Penn family beginning in 1741, in addition to serving on the Common Council of Philadelphia and the Governor's Council from the 1740s until his death. ALS signed “Willm: Logan,” three pages on two sheets, 7.75 x 6.25, February 4, 1766. Letter to James Read concerning the much-protested Stamp Act and local legislation. In part: “Arouze & let me hear how all thy Family do & what News You have among You—Nothing about Stamps—Every thing here Except what Passes in the News paper from the different Colonies Seems asleep—But we hope ye Current will now begin to open Again As the River does two Vessels having gone down it Yesterday & as many Come up—One from Lisbon, The other from So. Carolina but bring nothing New—Several Vessels are & have been at Reedy Island from Bristol Cork Madeira & West Indies, but nothing new by Any of them. The latest Accts. We have are from York by a Ship there which left Lond. of 18 November & Nothing of any Consequence by her more than the Paegt. brought 9 Days before. Private Letters mention that there is Great Uneasiness at home among the Merchants & Manufacturers on our Acc & our late oppressions by the Several late Acts, that it is Generally believed the Stamp Act will be Suspended for a Year, but Nothing to be depended on Could come by these Vessels as the Members of Parliament were but Just beginning to come into the City & till they meet Nothing Certain will be determined—Our Assembly have been Sitting for Some time & have prepared & Sent to the Govemt Several New Acts, which have not been considered…a Bill for a Bettering House in this City for regulating & Employing the Poor—Another for regulating Pilots—a Supplement to ye Watch Bills by an Additional Penalty on breaking our Lamps—Another for Preventing the taking of Oysters out of Season—Vizt the Three Summer Months—in order to preserve the Increase of their Beds which it is Said have been destroyed for Want of it—A Bill is in hand for Regulating Elections & Some Others Which I have not heard.” Professionally silked on both sides of the sheets for reinforcement. In very good condition, with repaired separations to intersecting folds (one vertical fold passing through a single letter of the signature), overall toning and a few light stains, chipping and small tears affecting a couple words, and show-through from writing to opposing sides.
