An Ohio artilleryman’s 1865 diary, with news of “the capture of the Rebel Gen Lee and his whole army” and “the assassination and death of Abraham Lincoln”

Personal leatherbound 1865 diary of Albert H. Lockwood of the Ohio 14th Light Artillery, 3 x 4.75, filled out with daily entries from January through May; the remainder was used for various notes, recipes, calculations, and has many blank pages. Especially notable entries include: January 1, “We was at this time out of hard tack and had to eat mush and pork with but little salt we considered this quite a scrumptious New Years dinner”; January 22, “A report got quite current to day that there had been a armistice between Jef Davis and the U. S. Government”; April 9, “Richmond Va reported captured again to day but it is not believed”; April 13, “Mobile was evacuated today and our forces entered and took possession”; April 16, “Today we received the most welcome news of the war. They were the official announcement of the capture of the Rebel Gen Lee and his whole army although it did not call many cheers from out Battery it created a desire to get home”; and April 30, “Today we had a good meal of straw berries. We got the official news of the assassination and death of Abraham Lincoln President of the United States.” Several other items belonging to Lockwood are included, such as a coin engraved with his initials; a small prayer book; a carte-de-visite portrait; and four Confederate banknotes. In overall very good condition, with front cover and spine partially detached from diary, a few loose pages, general toning and soiling, and heavy wear to banknotes.
