Soldier and statesman (1803–1857) who signed the Texas Declaration of Independence and served as chief justice of the Texas Supreme Court. LS signed “Tho. J. Rusk,” one page both sides, 7.75 x 10, April 15, 1839. A petition to President Mirabeau Lamar recommending Mr. Hart for Chief Justice of Nacogdoches County. Signed at the conclusion by eighteen supporters including Rusk. Intersecting folds, overall toning, and show-through from writing to opposing sides, otherwise fine condition.
