ALS signed “Fred,” nine pages two sets of adjoining sheets (one page cross-written), 4.5 x 7.5, September 17, 1863. Letter home to “Pa.” In part (spelling and grammar retained): “Waiting for the remainin regts. of the brig. to come out. Took the cars & got to Petersbugr about 8 o’clock…Spent the night in the market house…Left Petersburg on Tues morning, men in good spirits, shouting at every house they passed where there were ladies waving their handkerchifes. Our band played a number of lively aires as we marched through the streets…The men were packed away in baggage cars & a paassenger car had been reserved for the officers. I preferred to stay w/ the co. & rode on top of the cars all the way…I could not see the quality of the country through which I passed but if it was as poor as that we have traveled through from sunrise till we reach here I hardly think NC is worth fighting for.” He goes on to describe the city of Wilmington, mentioning that it had been thinned out by yellow fever.
