Description

Magnificent collection of 32 Errol Gray rough sketches for Snow White’s forest scene

(Walt Disney Studios, 1937) Amazing set of 32 original ‘rough’ animation drawings by Disney animator Errol Gray featuring Snow White from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Accomplished in graphite and colored pencil on untrimmed 12 x 10 animation paper. Several have ‘stage direction’ notations, specifying bodily movements as well as mouth positions to help create believable dialogue. These were drawn for the scene in which Snow White first encounters the forest animals, specifically depicting the sequence of her rising from the ground after sobbing, at first scaring away the animals before befriending them by singing ‘With a Smile and a Song’ to soothe their fears. The scene’s rendering in the final product differs slightly from these drawings, as Walt Disney opted to slightly revise her hairstyle and other minor details in order to simplify the animation process and attain a ‘softer’ look. The artist, Errol Gray, worked for Disney from 1934 to 1945 as an animator, producer, and director, and is most notable for illustrating Snow White's huntsman scene, and his artwork was displayed at the Disney California Adventure Park to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the film in 2007. A magnificent selection of production material from one of the most memorable scenes in Disney’s timeless classic.
