Description

Philo Remington

Industrialist (1816–1889) who succeeded his father, Eliphalet Remington, as head of the Remington firearms company, and went on to develop the first major US typewriter manufacturing business. TLS signed “P. Remington,” one page, 8.25 x 10.75, Remington Sewing Machine letterhead, December 7, 1877. Cordial response to an enraged customer threatening legal action. In part: “Please stay proceedings for a few days and we will try and see how much we can do to comply or accord with the spirit of your suggestions…I am quite touched by your allusion that the manner in which our sewing machine business has been conducted has been offensive…but in extenuation I can only plead that throughout all my long commercial life I have endeavored to do business uprightly and without offense; and if I have done any wrong I shall be glad to have an opportunity to make reparation as fast as possible.” A repaired tear affecting the extreme end of the signature and a small stained hole at the top, otherwise fine condition. An especially interesting letter, as it was written using the first model of Remington’s typewriter in which the type was all in uppercase letters. RR Auction COA.
