Highly decorated British field marshal (1832–1914) best known for leading the British victory during the Second Boer War. ALS signed “Fred. Roberts,” three pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.25 x 7, February 23, 1891. Letter to Sir Edwin Arnold. In full: “During my recent travels a friend drew my attention to the remark at page 175 of ‘India Revisited,’ in which it is stated that I went to the house in the Chandiri Chonk at Delhi ‘disguised as a Hindu’—and that the house is near Manikchund’s shop. I do not know how such a mistake could have occurred. I wore my uniform such as it was, and the house is within a few yards of the Lahore Gate, whereas Manikchund’s shop is, as I daresay can remember, not far from the Palace end of the Chandiri Chonk. Should you bring out another edition of ‘India Revisited,’ perhaps you would kindly have the mistake rectified. I see you have been spending some time in Japan—is there any chance of your paying India another visit?” An ANS penned by Arnold on the reverse directs his editors to rectify the error.
