Description

“Not for many years have we used intratracheal anaesthesia in intracranial surgery”

Surgeon (1869–1939) who pioneered many modern neurosurgical techniques and investigated the functions of the pituitary gland. TLS, one page, 7.75 x 10, Yale University letterhead, November 8, 1935. Letter to B. R. Stuehler, Jr. In full: “In reply to the questions in your letter of October 18th, just received, I may say that not for many years have we used intratracheal anaesthesia in intracranial surgery. Almost all of these operations at the present day are done under local anaesthesia with or without the combination of avertin or some similar hypnotic. Haemostasis of the scalp wound and flap in osteoplastic craniotomies is carried out merely by putting pointed haemostatic clamps on the galea and turning the scalp back.” Tastefully double-matted and framed with a photo of Cushing to an overall size of 19.5 x 17. In fine condition, with intersecting folds (one vertical fold passing through a single letter of the signature). Accompanied by the original mailing envelope. Incredible content regarding the development of brain surgery, the field that he pioneered. RR Auction COA.
