Collection of ten items, each signed by a notable Civil War figure, including: Philip H. Sheridan (ALS), Henry Wise (DS), John M. Schofield (ALS), Hiram Burnham (war-dated DS), Robert Ould (war-dated ANS), Daniel Ruggles (ALS), Wade Hampton (signature), Francis W. Kellogg (ALS), George A. Trenholm (DS), and George F. Root (AQS). In overall very good to fine condition. Individual descriptions are as follows:
Philip H. Sheridan: ALS signed “Phil,” four pages on two adjoining sheets, 5.25 x 8.5, August 22, 1866, in part: “The evening before you left I forgot my ring in the bath room & it has disappeared…Andy thinks you may have taken it & put it in your pocket, if not…I am very sorry. Please let me know.” Central vertical and horizontal folds and light scattered soiling, otherwise fine condition.
Henry Wise: Partly-printed DS, one page, 8 x 10, November 14, 1856, appointing Charles H. Austin “a Commissioner for this Commonwealth, in the State of Florida.” Signed at the conclusion by Wise and countersigned by Secretary George W. Mumford. In very good condition, with a couple of small pinholes along folds, paper loss to lower right edge, and a uniform shade of mild toning.
John M. Schofield: ALS signed “J. M. Schofield, Lieut. Genl. U. S. A.,” one page on a 4.25 x 3.5 card, no date, in full: “You ask for some thoughts on ‘some topic of the times.’ But my thoughts are absorbed in the history of the past, in which I find my ‘overreaction and pleasure.’” Addressed on the reverse in Schofield’s hand. In fine condition.
Hiram Burnham: Civil War–dated DS, one page, 7.75 x 10, July 15, 1862. Special requisition document for “One Wall Tent and Fly…One Sett Pole…Thirty Wall Tent Pins.” Signed at the conclusion by Burnham and countersigned by Benjamin F. Harris. In fine condition, with intersecting folds, some creases, and expected document wear.
Robert Ould: Civil War–dated ANS signed “Rob’t Ould, Ass’t Sec’y of War,” one page, 7.25 x 4.75, January 13, 1862. Official transmittal note, in full: “This is the copy of a letter written to R. A. Mills, on the 8th Jan. 1862, by the Secretary of War.” Intersecting folds, light staining to the upper left, and trimmed edges, otherwise fine condition.
Daniel Ruggles: ALS signed “D. Ruggles, Capt’n Infy,” one page, 7.75 x 8.5, November 23, 1847. Letter to Colonel John M. Geary, in part: “I have the honor in the act of changing my seat to reiterate before this body, my protest against the assignment of Capt. C. R. Gold of the 8th Infy. to a seat above me on this commission according to his Brevet rank, as an arbitrary act of power unknown to the laws of the U. States, and the established usage of the service, and to express my regret that the Commanding General while adhering to such a decision, has felt constrained to refuse my request to be excused from sitting as a member in accordance with it.” In very good condition, with intersecting folds (one vertical fold passing through first letter of the signature), and scattered discoloration and soiling.
Wade Hampton: Ink signature, “Wade Hampton, So. Ca.,” on an off-white 3 x 1.75 card. In fine condition, with a light crease to the top.
Francis W. Kellogg: ALS signed “F. W. Kellogg,” one page, lightly-lined, 7.75 x 10.25, congressional letterhead, March 14, 1864. Letter to Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton, in part: “Major Wilson, Hon. William Kellogg of Ills., and a party of three friends…wish to visit Mt. Vernon & respectfully request a pass or permit to land there.” Also endorsed on the reverse by Alexander Ramsay and Zachariah Chandler. In fine condition, with a trivial stain to the lower right corner.
George A. Trenholm: Partly-printed DS, signed “G. A. Trenholm,” one page, 8.25 x 13.75, January 1, 1868. South Carolina merchant’s bond for $64.40, in which “Theodore D. Wagner and William L. Trenholm…are held and firmly bonded…under an agreement…in behalf of John Fraser and Company.” Signed at the conclusion by both Wagner and William Trenholm, with George A. Trenholm and James Walsman signing as witnesses on the reverse. In fine condition, with expected document wear.
George F. Root: AQS on an off-white 3.5 x 2.5 card, signed “Geo. F. Root, Feb. 1892.” Root pens five lines of lyrics from one of his songs. In part: “Why do you wait dear brother, / Oh why do you tarry so long? / Your Savior in mercy would give you / A place in this sanctified throng. / Why not come to Him now?” In fine condition, with the writing a shade light.
