Description

Signing off as “Charlotte” in letters to her former Bronte biopic co-star

Four letters to fellow actress Ida Lupino, each one page, dated between December 1988 and April 1990. First TLS, signed “Liv (Charlotte to you, Emily!),” in part: “It may well be that the French postal strike was provoked by the receipt of your telegram, the joke contained therein having so discombobulated the P.T.T. that it has been unable to function since.” Second, signed “Olivia,” in part: “It was good of you to call me from the Motion Picture Country Home where I once visited several times Mitch Leisen (who loved being there) and also Mary Astor.” Third, signed “Charlotte,” in part: “I have no news whatsoever of Mrs. Danvers’ presence in Europe…if she manages to elude the authorities and gain the Capital, you may be sure I will send out an alarm.” Fourth, signed “Liv,” in part: “My yard is covered with dead leaves and evidences of pigeon habitation.” In overall fine condition. Accompanied by two of the original mailing envelopes. De Havilland co-starred with Lupino in the 1946 biographical film Devotion, in which she played Charlotte Bronte to Lupino’s Emily—a film that both clearly enjoyed making, with their continued references to it over four decades later.
