“My state will present my name to the National Demo’c Conv’n in 1876 as the nominee for vice-president”

Prominent abolitionist leader (1810–1903) known as the ‘Lion of Whitehall.’ An ardent supporter of Lincoln, he served as American Minister to Russia from 1862 to 1869, in which capacity he was instrumental in negotiations for the purchase of Alaska. ALS signed “C. M. Clay,” one page, lightly-lined, 4.5 x 7.5, December 11, 1876. Letter to C. G. Faulkner. In part: “My state will present my name to the National Demo’c Conv’n in 1876 as the nominee for vice-president. For my antecedents I refer you to the Honl. M. G. Durham & Ed. G. Parsons of Kentucky.” Professionally inlaid into a slightly larger sheet. In fine condition. RR Auction COA.
