The ‘Hero of Louisbourg’

Merchant and soldier (1696–1759) in Colonial Massachusetts, remembered for organizing, financing, and leading the 1745 expedition that captured the French garrison at Fortress Louisbourg during King George's War. ALS signed “Wm. Pepperrell: J. peace,” one page, 6.75 x 8.25, February 24, 1719. Arrest warrant sent to the “Constable of Kittery.” In part (spelling and grammar retained): “Require you & in his Majesties name that immediately upon sight…bring Joseph Gunison…before me, at my Dwelling house…To Answer to Such Matters of Misdemeanor, as on his Majesties behalfe…complaint of Andrew Poore, who alledges…Gunison Unlegally Take and Detaine from him a paper of one Instrument of agreement.” In very good condition, with intersecting folds (two vertical folds passing through letters of the signature), and scattered foxing.
