Handwritten poem on a 5.25 x 3 envelope bearing an affixed three-cent George Washington stamp, canceled in Beverly, MA, circa 1862–3. In full: “To Charles H. Millett, and George his brother, / You’ll forward this, and please their mother; / On Roanoke, you there will find, / In Carolina (North) now mind, / By way of Norfolk this must go, The powers that be decreed it so, / Their Company, the boys call E, / If Massachusetts Eighth you see; / Francis E. Porter holds command, / This to his care you’ll understand. / God speed the right, and end the war, / And to their homes our friends restore.” In very good condition, with two vertical folds, light creasing and soiling, and a torn left edge from opening. Charles H. Millett (1843–1911) was mustered into Company E of the 8th Massachusetts on September 19, 1862, and mustered out August 7, 1863; George Millett (1842–1921) served in Company G of the 8th Massachusetts from September 1862 to April 1864.
