Surgeon (1838–1913) who was commissioned a first lieutenant in the Union Army and 1862 and served as a surgeon during the Battle of Gettysburg. Handwritten endorsement, signed “Jno S. Billings, Ass’t Surg USA in Charge,” not dated but circa 1862–63, one page, 6.5 x 5. To Owen Lovejoy MC, Billings writes, in full: “Respectfully returned with the information that no sufficient cause of discharge exists for this man as he will be fit for duty in three weeks.” In fine condition, with a bit of scattered light toning and soiling.
