Union officer (1834–1893) who had the distinction of being chosen to receive the stacked arms of General Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia at Appomattox Court House. War-dated endorsement signed “Jos. J. Bartlett,” on an off-white 3.25 x 5.5 sheet taken from a larger document. Written in another hand, endorsement reads, “5th Corps, Nov. 15th, 1863. Respectfully forwarded. Approved.” A second endorsement underneath reads, “Respectfully referred to the Medical Director of the Corps. By command of Gen. Sykes, Fred T. Locke, A. A.
